Sweet Charlie Strawberry Plants are Tasty June Bearing Strawberry Variety

Just as the name implies, the Sweet Charlie Strawberry berries tastes like they have sugar on them fresh from the field. Sweet Charlie Strawberry plants are vigorous, disease-resistant, and produce large firm berry fruit.

How to Grow a Rose of Sharon Shrub Hedge

Growing a Rose of Sharon hedge in Your Garden is an excellent way of creating a private garden area during the summer season. Changing the appearance of your garden can be easily done. Regardless of the size of your garden, you don’t have to spend more time, money, and effort in improving its appearance. Tips on growing Rose of Sharon hedges in your garden:

• Pick Your Planting Site – Rose of Sharon grows in full sun areas. They also grow well in a part sun or part shade areas though blooming may be limited. 
•  Prepare the Planting Site – You can do this through digging the hole approximately 4 to 6 inches deeper than the root system and about a foot wide. If you have clay soil, mix into the fill dirt aged compost or aged manure mix and some coarse sand for drainage.
• Put the Rose of Sharon Shrubs in the Planting Hole – Do this step carefully, fill holes and water. You may need to add more soil around the plant and water it again if it settles too deeply.
• Fertilizers – Fertilize can be applied in spring after the plant begins to leaf out. A balanced timed release is best. If using aged compost and aged manure mixes as mulch regularly, there should be no need for a fertilizer application.

Winterberry Shrubs are the Queens of Fruiting Shrubs

Winterberry Shrubs are the "queens" of fruiting shrubs world when ranked for ornamental value. From early fall through winter, the branches are covered in bright-red fruits. The fruiting branches are great for decoration in the garden or in the house. These plants have multi-branches, so clipping a few doesn't take away from the appearance of your mature plants. Or leave the branches for the birds since over 40 species of birds are known to eat the fruit, including: bluebirds, brown thrashers, cedar waxwings, flickers, gray catbirds, mockingbirds and robins. The dense branching also provides shelter, cover and nesting spots for birds.

The leaves of Winterberry plants are thick and dark green and contrast well with the red fruit. The foliage stays healthy all summer and isn't bothered by insects. How to Pick the Right Tree for Your Yard

Picking the right tree for your yard can be daunting. Garden plants will come and go in your yard, but trees are there to stay. Follow these tips for picking the right tree for your yard and you will be the new plant expert for your neighborhood.

1. Where will the tree be planted? Near the house, garage, garden, etc? Unlike shrubs that have narrower root growth, the root system for trees expands often as far as the canopy of what the mature size of the tree will be. If you want a maple tree near your house, you’d have to remember that maple trees mature in the 50 to 70 foot height range, which can develop a canopy of approximately a half to the same in width. You would need plant that tree no closer than at minimum 50 feet from any foundation due to potential damage in the long term. On the other hand, a Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae can mature in the 50 to 70 height range, too, but it’s mature spread is only as wide as 10 to 15 feet, which means that it can be planted closer to a foundation than it’s height. So…plant a tree as far away from a building/house/etc as it spread in width allowing for expansion of the root system.

Growing your Bay Laurel indoors: Select a well-drained container 10 to 14 inches in diameter and pot with fresh potting soil. Move to a very brightly lit area - direct sunlight is best. In winter keep within 55 to 65 degrees. Excessive heat can cause stress and rapid drying while cold temperatures (prolonged periods below 45 degrees) can cause damage. Move your bay laurel outdoors in summer, if possible: sunlight and fresh air encourage growth.

Introduced in 2012, the Phenomenal Lavender will prove to be one of the hardiest lavenders available. Lavendula x intermedia 'Phenomenal' does not experience winter die back as seen in varieties such as Munstead and Hidcote. With its proven winter survival, the Phenomenal Lavender is hardy as far north as zone 4, which is unusual for lavender plants.

California Privet Evergreen Hedge for Your Landscape

California Privet is an evergreen flowering shrub that is commonly used for shrub borders and privacy hedges. The oval shaped dark green leaves of the fast growing shrub California Privet provide a great backdrop for the small white flowers that appear in late spring to early summer. These blooms give way to tiny black fruit that is enjoyed by birds.

California Privet hedge spacing should be 4 to 5 feet apart. Fertilizing California Privet can be done in spring or early fall. Broadcast 3/4 of 15-5-15 or 15-5-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet of privet hedge. Prune your privet hedge in spring or immediately after flowering.

This fast growing evergreen shrub, Ligustrum ovalifolium, creates a beautiful privacy hedge growing 10 to 15 feet tall. While common privet is invasive, California Privet and Japanese Privet are appropriate choices for hedges and as they can be easily controlled as foundation plantings or garden plants.

The fragrance emitted by the flowers of the California Privet is considered to be somewhat unpleasant. Pruning at this time will prevent this situation. All parts of this plant is poisonous to humans. Deer, rabbit and drought resistant.
